Hungry? Why You Should Be Cooking with Coconut Oil

We’ve talked about the many benefits of coconut oil before and we will again because this stuff is wonderful. It’s packed full of all kinds of health boosting compounds. You can use it for almost anything, from making your hair shine, shine, shine to adding a bit of flavor to your organic coffee.

But did you know coconut oil is also one of the best types of cooking oil? It’s time to ditch your olive oil for this miraculous and tasty new trend – cooking with coconut oil.

Check out the top four benefits of cooking with coconut oil below!

Heart Health

Coconut oil is made up of saturated fats. Now these can be bad for you, but the ones in coconut oil are rich in lauric acid. Lauric acid helps boost HDL, aka the healthy type of cholesterol. High levels of HDL are super good for your heart.

Coconut oil is also made up of medium chain triglycerides or MCTs. This type of saturated fat is way easier for your body to absorb than long chain triglycerides and helps takes strain off your heart.

MCTs are also used directly by your body for energy, so there are no wasted compounds that need to be broken down by the liver and other organs.

Weight Loss

One of the best parts of cooking with coconut oil is that it can actually help you lose weight.

Removing the strain caused by multiple organs digesting and processing long chain triglycerides helps your body to burn more calories. If your liver and pancreas don’t have to spend time breaking down coconut oil, they can spend time breaking down other fats.

Coconut oil also helps boost your thyroid, which helps in shedding pounds.

You’ll only want to use a couple of tablespoons though. Too many MCTs, in certain circumstances, might be a cause of digestive trouble, which you may want to avoid.

Boost Your Immune System

Coconut oil contains a multitude of immune boosting compounds. The most powerful are decanoic (capric) acid, caprylic acid, antimicrobial lipids, and lauric acid.

Capric and caprylic acids have antifungal, antiviral, and antibacterial properties. They’re awesome for fighting bacteria throughout the body, but especially in the stomach and digestive tract. Think of these acids as like super probiotics.

We talked about some of the benefits of lauric acid earlier, but we didn’t talk about the immune benefits. Lauric acid is converted into monolaurin, which has microbial properties and has been shown to help fight off staph infection.

Boost Brain Function

Cooking with coconut oil is good for your brain too. If you’re noticing a theme here, it’s that there is basically nothing this awesome oil can’t do.

The MCTs in coconut oil are turned into ketones by your body. Ketones are used by your brain as a backup source of energy. Okay, backup energy doesn’t sound that important, right? It isn’t, until you realize our brains need to refuel every twenty minutes or so.

Yep, seems more important now.

And there you have the top four reasons you should be cooking with coconut oil. There four reasons are just the beginning of the coconut oil benefit iceberg. Check out our shop for coconut oil today!
